MICRONEEDLING BEFORE & AFTER
Real results. What to expect and when.
Microneedling results don't happen overnight. The treatment works by stimulating your skin's own collagen production, which means the most visible improvements appear gradually, building across a series of sessions rather than appearing immediately after one.

The photos and information on this page show what realistic outcomes look like: what changes after one session, what develops over three to six treatments, and why results vary from person to person.
Microneedling Before and After Photos
The images below show results from a patient treated for acne scarring at ALLOR Cosmetic Medicine in Auckland. Results differ between individuals depending on skin type, concern severity, and the number of sessions completed.

Acne scarring before and after three microneedling treatments, individual results may vary.
Microneedling Results After One Session
After a single microneedling session, most people notice their skin looks brighter and feels smoother. There may be some early improvement in tone or a refreshed quality to the complexion within the first one to two weeks.

Deeper changes such as acne scar reduction, significant texture improvement, and collagen remodelling take longer. These develop as the skin continues to repair and rebuild in the weeks following treatment. One session starts the process; it doesn't complete it.
How Many Microneedling Sessions Do You Need?
The number of sessions depends on what you’re treating, how your skin responds, and how significant the concern.

Acne Scarring
Acne scarring typically requires the most sessions, usually 3–6, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. The reason is structural: scar tissue is denser and more fibrous than normal skin. Microneedling works by breaking down that fibrous tissue gradually and stimulating new collagen to replace it. This remodelling process cannot be accelerated beyond what the skin's natural healing cycle allows.

Shallower scars tend to respond better than deep ice-pick scars. Ice-pick scars are narrow and deep - microneedling can improve the skin around them and soften their appearance, but deeper scarring may benefit from a combined treatment approach with chemical peels. Dr. Heather will assess the scar type at your consultation and be straightforward about what microneedling alone can realistically achieve.

Most people with acne scarring notice the most significant visible improvement between sessions 3 and 5, as cumulative collagen production reaches a point where surface texture changes become visible.

Skin Texture and Enlarged Pores
For general texture concerns, rough or uneven skin, enlarged pores or dullness, 3–4 sessions is usually sufficient as a starting course. These concerns respond earlier than scarring because they involve the more superficial layers of the skin rather than deep structural changes.

Microneedling tightens the skin around pores and supports collagen scaffolding, which can make pores appear smaller and less congested over time. Results are progressive and the improvement after session 3 will typically be more noticeable than after session 1.

Fine Lines and Early Wrinkles
Fine lines respond well to microneedling because they reflect collagen loss in the dermis - exactly what microneedling addresses. A course of 3–4 sessions typically produces a visible improvement in skin firmness and a reduction in the appearance of surface lines.

The important distinction here is between fine lines (surface creases, often related to skin quality and collagen) and deeper expression lines (caused by repeated muscle movement). Microneedling is well-suited to the former. For deeper dynamic lines, Botulinum toxin treatment may be more appropriate - something Dr. Heather will discuss with you at consultation.
Because collagen production naturally slows with age, maintenance sessions every 6–12 months are generally recommended after the initial course to sustain results.

General Skin Rejuvenation
If your goal is overall skin quality improvement - brighter, smoother, more resilient skin without a specific concern to treat, 3 sessions is often a good starting point. Many people notice a meaningful difference in skin radiance and tone after this initial course and then choose to continue with periodic maintenance rather than committing to a longer series upfront.

Dr. Heather will recommend a treatment plan based on your skin at your initial consultation. The number of sessions suggested will reflect what your skin actually needs - not a package designed around a fixed number.
When Will You See Results?
Collagen remodelling takes time. Here is a realistic timeline:
Days 1- 4 :
Redness and mild sensitivity settle. Skin may feel slightly dry or tight.
Weeks 1 - 2 :
Skin looks refreshed. Some early improvement in tone and brightness.
Weeks 4 - 6 :
More visible improvements in texture and smoothness as collagen builds.
Months 2 - 3 :
Collagen remodelling peaks. This is typically when the most noticeable changes in scarring and skin quality are seen.
With each subsequent session, these improvements build further.
Why Results Vary Between People?
Skin type, age, genetics, the severity of the concern being treated, and how many sessions are completed all influence outcomes. Deeper acne scars typically require more treatments and may benefit from combining microneedling with other approaches. Skin that is well-supported with appropriate skincare and sun protection will also heal and respond more effectively.

This is why we assess your skin before recommending a plan - not to up-sell sessions, but because realistic expectations lead to better outcomes.
